Map of Arabian Peninsula When viewed in profile, this rare and beautiful desert antelope with its slender legs, creamy white coat, dark eyes and long straight horns brings to mind the mythical unicorn. Once plentiful on the Arabian Peninsula, the gentle oryx, prized by trophy hunters and natives, completely disappeared from the wild in 1972. That this species still survives at all is the result of an intense international conservation effort in which Lincoln Park Zoo plays a vital role. It is encouraging to note that already a large number of captive-born Arabian oryx have been reintroduced to Oman on the Arabian Peninsula, and that future generations are back on track to being re-established in the wild.
